• Smooth Trans Focus (STF) Technology: Uses a unique apodization (APD) element, which is a special filter that becomes denser toward the edges. This attenuates the edges of out-of-focus highlights, eliminating hard, ring-like edges in the bokeh.
• Aperture & T-Stop System: While the lens has a physical maximum aperture of f/2.8 for depth of field, the APD filter reduces light transmission to T5.6 when wide open. This means it provides the shallow depth-of-field of an f/2.8 lens but requires the light-gathering exposure of an f/5.6 lens.
• G Master Resolution: Despite the focus on bokeh, the lens maintains high sharpness, fulfilling the demanding 50 lines per millimeter MTF requirements of the G Master series, featuring one Aspherical element and one Extra-low Dispersion (ED) element.
• Dual Focus System: Features a Direct Drive SSM (DDSSM) motor for fast, quiet, and precise autofocus, compatible with both contrast and phase-detection systems.
• Built-in Macro Switching: A ring on the barrel allows for a “macro” mode, reducing the minimum focus distance to 0.57m (1.87 ft) with a 0.25x maximum magnification.
• Optical SteadyShot (OSS): Built-in image stabilization reduces camera shake, essential for handheld shooting at 100mm.
• Video-Friendly Controls: Features a de-clickable aperture ring for silent, smooth exposure adjustments during filming.
